Aladdin's Cave

It is rare enough nowadays to find an Alcoa Cash for Cans centre. Until we get container deposit legislation, it is only the very motivated who try to make a few dollars from recycling cans. However such a rare place is to be found along Brunswick Road, just a few doors from where the great Sydney Road begins. And when I went there, I found what looked like a treasure trove.

The metal recycling centre Consolidated Metal Industries has been there since 1950, one of the workmen informed me, as I stood in the queue. The lady before me had brought a stash of brass items: plant holders, vases, ashtrays, trays and even a lyre shaped old music stand. The man before her brought old piping, old kettles, teapots and copper piping. Some other people after me brought plastic bags full of squashed aluminium cans. They probably weren’t from a school that has no recycling processes of its own, like mine, they were most likely just from the festive season at their home. All items were weighed on a huge Avery scale, a receipt given and money collected at a window. The experience was priceless.
