Why are there no more cinemas in Brunswick or Coburg? Surely there would be a market for a small boutique cinema? I know we can catch the 8 or 1 trams down to the Nova in Carlton, but it would be great to revive at least one of the many old movie houses that used to exist in this area.
Recently I stumbled upon this gem of a building, although unfortunately I have not seen inside. According to this website, it only stopped operating as a cinema in 1998 and featured in the movie "Death in Brunswick". It is sadly in disrepair now although fortunately still being used as a dance school. I would love to see inside. If only there were someone with the funds to restore it and make it a community asset.
The lettering on the signs is really wonderful, but just as intriguing is the design on the iron gate - WCPA. What do these letters stand for? West Coburg Progress.....? Please leave me a message.
Hi. I went here heaps as a kid :)
ReplyDeleteWCPA is West Coburg Progress Association.
The entry during the '80s was from the front but it was changed in the early '90s to be the side via the WCPA gate.
Inside is typical deco-ish. Leather seats, slightly ramped floor, heavy drapes etc.
They even used to serve tea and coffee in real cups not foam or cardboard!
Ahhhh, back in my day!
