Brickworks

Walking or driving around Brunswick you can see many kinds of bricks. It is a suburb of bluestones and bricks. One of the biggest recent residential complexes is called Brickworks, and it is a redevelopment of the former Hoffman Brickworks which opened in 1862 and produced bricks and pottery until 1990.
In an amazing aerial photograph from 1920 the deep pits are evident. Now they are parks.

The history of the brickworks and associated pottery production is fascinating, and I learned a bit more about the lovely pottery of the nineteenth and early twentieth century at an exhibition in Bundoora earlier this year. I was also thrilled to find a Hoffman bowl whilst clearing through my cupboards at my old house.

There is a lot of interest in preserving what remains of this historic site of a long finished industry which was so important to the area.  I would like to explore it myself and connect with groups who are interested in its history.
